Cutout 11-2

2011
Not on view
By slicing her clay with wires, Hoshino Kayoko “releases” the forms within the clay to create silhouettes and shapes inspired by the mountain peaks of the natural landscape of Japan near Lake Biwa. This banded collar form in teardrop shape has linear patterning, similar to delicately folded Japanese paper or a finely pleated textile, created by impressing metal files. The work’s unusual shape and the deep incisions on the surface create an interplay of light and shadow.
