Mount Stetind
Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender. This peak on the north shoulder of Norway’s coast rises over 4,500 feet from the sea. Balke was attracted to the mountain’s improbable form, which he painted many times. The artist signed this painting, indicating that it is a finished work despite its small size and overt sketchiness, which are in fact typical of his mature paintings.
