Designer Junya Watanabe Japanese
spring/summer 2006
Not on view
As a designer for Comme des Garçons, Junya Watanabe excelled by fusing Kawakubo's confrontational approach to traditional form with his own interest in historicism. Watanabe cited the Japanese punk band Mad Capsule Markets as the source of inspiration for his spring/summer 2006 collection, which featured slashed t-shirts, bondage pants, and spiked paperboard head pieces. He combines transgression with tradition in this ensemble, a modified trench coat with a jacket in the style of late eighteenth-century men's coats and a skirt of collaged and twisted remnants.
