This is Annibale's most famous and one of his most successful prints. The composition is related to Correggio's Deposition of 1525, now at the Galleria Nazionale in Parma. The Carracci's admiration for Correggio's work is witnessed by a drawn copy of the Deposition attributed to Agostino or Annibale, in the Codice Resta in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana, Milan. The print went through seven states and at least sixteen printed copies. Annibale returned repeatedly to the subject of the Pietà, most famously in a painting in oil on copper, now at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, the composition of which is closely related to this print
