The subject of this print was described by Bartsch as Jupiter and Antiope, though Bohn thinks that Venus and a Satyr is a more probable identification. The composition is related to a drawing by Agostino Carracci now at the Albertina (inv. no. 2113; 184 x 244 mm). The drawing either served as the inspiration for Annibale's print or was derived from it. Agostino produced a number of prints of lascivious subjects. The print was very popular: it was copied at least three times and many impressions survive
