Tavern Sign
Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender. This rare surviving sign for the tavern or coffeehouse A la Gaité, probably established in the town of Versailles in 1760, shows three merry drinkers. A la Gaité was one of many establishments near the palace that catered to travelers in need of refreshment after their journey to Versailles—or simply looking for a place to touch up their wigs, as did a doctor from Sweden, Martin Roland, in September 1754.
