Tableau
Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender. In this exquisite floral still life on porcelain, presented to Gustav III of Sweden in 1784, Micaud’s effortless handling belies the high degree of technical ability required to successfully fire it. The artist began his career at Sèvres in 1757, and by the time he painted this tableau (a piece intended for framing), in the early 1780s, he was one of the best flower painters at the factory. Micaud was paid handsomely for his expertise: in two decades, his wages more than tripled.
