The Formal Entry of Cornelis Hop into Paris

Dutch ambassador Cornelis Hop formally entered Paris on July 23, 1719, when the carriage and retinue specially ordered for the ceremony were ready. Hop’s vehicle (on the lower right) is preceded by two equestrian Swiss Guards and drawn by eight black horses, although the diplomat himself rode with the Introducer of Ambassadors in the third (royal) carriage.
