The Nations of Asia
Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender. This work was a study for the wall decoration of the Ambassadors’ Staircase, which featured trompe l’oeil paintings of loggias with representatives of the four continents (Europe, Asia, Africa, and America). It foreshadows the foreign embassies that would be escorted up the stairs when Louis XIV moved his court to Versailles in 1682.
