This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.
The Roman world envisioned on the Silver Caesars owes much to the emblematic imagery found on ancient coins. These concise yet eloquent motifs inform details of architecture and individual figures and sometimes even the entire composition of scenes on the tazze. This use of numismatic imagery could have been achieved either through firsthand knowledge of ancient coins or, more likely, through close study of the many numismatic treatises published in the Renaissance.
