Carved Doors

Armenian

Not on view

These monumental carved wooden doors have four framed zones surrounded by tendril ornamentation. The right door shows four apostles, identified by inscription: Peter, Mark, Matthew, and Paul. The figurative panel on the left displays the Baptism of Christ, with Christ half immersed in water and flanked by two figures, presumably Archangel Gabriel and Saint John the Baptist. Behind Christ is the Hand of God; a large fish swims in the water below. The baptismal imagery reinforces the attribution of the doors to a church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist.
