Anonymous, French, 18th century French
Not on view
Design for textile (?) that is part of a group of ten designs, all containing trophies and pasted on sheets of blue paper with frames hand-drawn with black and pasted and rendered with metallic pigment. The type trophies in the designs, which are inspired on gardening and other outdoor activities, were common in the eighteenth century and could be used in wallpapers, tapestries and even as textiles for furniture.
This design, titled "Le jardinage" (gardening), contains a brown straw hat with a blue ribbon that holds together two gardening tools that intersect to form an x-shape: a shovel and a rake. Under the hat hang four pink roses with green stylized leaves, from which emerges a thin garland of red roses, green leaves, and other blue and pink small stylized flowers and flower buds, that hangs from the rake. Over the hat stands a stylized bird with white and light green frathers, and orange beak and legs, and a similar one stands on the rake, close to the tip.
