Fragments with Gold Glaze (Kinsai no tōhen)

Yamada Hikaru Japanese

Not on view

Yamada initially worked on functional objects, and by the 1950s turned to making sculptures. Toward the end of his career he explored the relationship between slab surfaces and raised or gouged-out patterns. Unlike a traditional vessel, which encloses empty space, many of Yamada’s hand-built “screen” sculptures integrate the surrounding space into the composition. In this work, he focused on torn pieces of clay, which he glazed in gold and suspended in space.
