Portrait of Falak, Bachubhai ki wadi, Mumbai

Ketaki Sheth Indian

Not on view

Sheth began taking pictures on the streets of Mumbai in the 1980s, under the guidance of the prominent Indian photographer Raghubir Singh. A Mumbai native, she has an uncanny ability to discern order amidst the chaos and clutter of the city's streets. Like the American photographer Helen Levitt, Sheth captures the impish exuberance of children with great clarity and sensitivity. Here, she contrasts the quiet melancholy of a neatly dressed toddler with the manic energy of a shoddily attired girl frozen in a blur of movement behind her.
