Optical View of the Hall of Mirrors
Published by Cuny François Daumont French
Not on view
Showing the Hall of Mirrors complete with courtiers, this image was meant to be seen through a special device with a magnifying lens and a mirror to create the illusion of depth. Optical views reached their heyday between 1750 and 1770, when they were produced by several families of Parisian printers. Most were intended for distribution throughout Europe, as the captions in Latin and French here indicate.
