Figure Studies after Veronese's "The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian"

In this copy of a composition by the Italian Renaissance painter Paolo Veronese—likely based on the etching by Giuseppe Maria Mitelli (Italian, 1634–1718)—Delacroix omitted the central subject of his source, the body of Saint Sebastian. He included only his legs, supported by the figure hunched at the center of the drawing, and the displaced pointing hand at lower right. Delacroix focused instead on the arrangement and various attitudes of the attendant figures, drawing attention to those reacting to the event.
