Flower Basket in the Chinese Style
Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender. In this simple but decorative composition, blossoms and leafy stems spill from the lip of a Chinese-style bamboo flower basket suspended from above by a red cord. In its use of color, meticulous detail, and asymmetrical composition, the painting reflects conventions established in Japan by members of the Nagasaki School, followers of the Chinese artist Shen Nanpin (active 1725–80), who lived and worked in the port city for several years.
