Nobilis Virgo Senensis, Nobilis matrona Senensis, Nobilis faemina Senensis
Engraving, part of 'Habitus variarum orbis gentium' (Costumes of the various peoples of the world), representing the costumes of men and women from various parts of the world, engraved after designs by Boissard and published by Rutz in 1581.
This engraving represents two noblewomen and a damsel from Siena. On the left, the damsel wears a long dress with ruff and train, the petticoat of brocaded fabric with foliage motifs, and the long puff sleeves trimmed with bows on the shoulders. She wears a jeweled necklace and pendant earrings, and a longer necklace that marks the bustline. Her hair is tied up and held with bows.
On the center, a noblewoman wears a dress of brocaded fabric with scrolling leaves, the long puff sleeves trimmed with bows on the shoulders. She wears a hood on her head, attached to the neckline of her dress, and above it a long veil, which hangs on her shoulders and behind her back, held with her hands on the front of the dress. A hat is placed above them. She also wears pendant pearl earrings and a double pearl necklace.
On the right, the second noblewoman wears a long dress with plain fabric; the bodice has an open, short ruff and vertical stripes. She wears a short pearl necklace and a longer double chain necklace on her chest. Her hair is tied up and covered by a pleated veil. A long-sleeved mantle, trimmed with bows on the shoulders, covers most of her dress. She holds a pair of gloves on her left hand.
