Song of Sixteen Characters: Poem by Mao Zedong
Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender. The speed and motion of soldiers and horses, as well as the flames and smoke swirling into the sky, convey a powerful sense of the urgency of battle. Fu’s image is only loosely based on Mao’s poem:
Mountain.
The sea collapses and the river boils.
Innumerable horses race
Insanely into the peak of battle.
