Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.
Level Sands and Descending Geese was one of the “Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers” that were first painted in the Northern Song era (960–1127) following poems of the same theme composed by Song Di (act. late 11th century). Fu Baoshi painted this image several times in his last years. The contemplative mood and sense of isolation evoked by the painting may suggest something of the artist’s own mental state at this time.
