This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.Drawing on memory and imagination, Fu Baoshi painted this hauntingly beautiful snow scene in mid-autumn. Fu’s elongated composition, which emphasizes the height of the trees, and his flattening of the trees’ bare branches into abstract lacework has transformed this vision of snow-spattered hills and an icy river into a mysterious realm of arbitrary patterns. The travelers’ blue and red attire punctuates this poetically somber landscape with cheerful accents and human warmth.
