Lotus Flowers, Leaf from the Mustard Seed Garden Painting Manual, part 3

After Zhang Lu Chinese

Not on view

Parts 2 and 3 of the Mustard Seed Garden Painting Manual were compiled in 1701 by Wang Gai and his brothers (or nephews) Wang Shi and Wang Nie. These visually appealing sections reproduce colorful, animated images of flowers, plants, birds, and insects. Closely imitating real paintings, these prints often combine pictorial imagery with the calligraphy and seals of the artists who made the designs. The precise contours and chromatic variations attest to the superb craftsmanship of the carver and the printer.
