This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.
This Buddha is in the style of sculptures from the great monastery of Sarnath, in northern India. The diaphanous robes, flexed posture, closely modeled curls, and calm beauty of the face affirm a Sarnath connection, while the characteristic fine-grained buff-colored sandstone indicates that it was an Indian import to peninsular Thailand. Given its diminutive size, it may have been commissioned expressly for export, perhaps by a monk returning to his monastery after a period of study in northern India. It would have served as an inspirational model for local artisans at the time.
