Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.
This panel, from the northeast elevation, basement level, depicts a celestial musician (kinnara), a bird-man creature who occupied the heavenly realms as an entertainer, seen here playing his preferred instrument, the Indian vina. The creature is birdlike apart from the arms and head, the latter beautifully modeled in what has crystalized into a distinctive Dvaravati-style physiognomy.
