Elvis at the Mississippi-Alabama Fair & Dairy Show
On loan to The Met
This work of art is currently on loan to the museum.Elvis’s appearances often spurred protests by religious conservatives who were scandalized by his suggestive dancing, rebellious music, and willingness to work alongside black musicians in the segregated South. As a result, many of his posters were destroyed. This rare example commemorates Elvis’s first performance in his hometown of Tupelo, Mississippi, after he achieved nationwide stardom.
