Tall Clock
Gawen Brown American
The dial on this clock may represent Gawen Brown's earliest work, since the spandrels feature the urn and eagle common on English dials of the early eighteenth century. This dial was originally square; the top arch was added, probably by Brown himself. Brown's works are usually found in Boston cases, but this one is from Newport, Rhode Island. It is a simpler version of another Newport tall clock in the Museum's collection (27.57.2) with a case made by John Townsend.
