Manet and the young poet Mallarmé struck up a close friendship in 1873. The writer, who began making almost daily visits to the artist’s studio, came to Manet’s defense the following year in an article criticizing the Salon jury after they rejected two of the three works the painter had submitted. This intimate portrait, which Manet painted to express his appreciation for a second article, “The Impressionists and Édouard Manet” (1876), shows Mallarmé deep in thought, his gaze remote, with his hand resting on pages perhaps recently penned or published.
