This engraving comes from a series reproducing works in "The Vernon Gallery," pictures collected by Robert Vernon (1774–1849) who amassed a fortune as contractor supplying horses to the British armies during the Napoleonic wars. Subsequently, he began to acquire paintings by living British artists and in 1847 he presented 157 to the nation. These were kept and shown at Marlborough House on Pall Mall before being moved to the South Kensington Museum, and then the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square in 1876. They were later divided between the latter and the Tate Gallery.
