Mountain-shaped incense burner

China

Qing dynasty (1644–1911), Qianlong mark and period (1736–95)

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 216

This censer is a typical example of a faithful copy of ancient bronzes from the imperial Qing workshop in Beijing. In 1743, the Qianlong emperor sent an antiquarian catalogue to the imperial foundry with a directive to select two models for new vessels, including a Han dynasty hill censer like the current one.
