Ritual wine cup (jue)
On loan to The Met
This work of art is currently on loan to the museum.This cup is an example of the communal credit officials took for commissions of ritual bronzes for local Confucian temples. The names documented on the cup indicate that the top officials involved—Hulitai and Hongzhu Haimishi—were either Mongol or Central Asian, not Han Chinese. Their willingness to include their names signals their recognition of the importance of showing respect for China’s Confucian traditions.

監郡忽里台、太守洪柱海弥實、教授李遵憲、學正王崇德、學錄張思敏 至正庚寅歲淮安路儒學
Supervisor Hulitai, Prefect Hongzhu Haimishi, Instructor Li Zunxian, Educational Instructor Wang Congde, Instructor Third-Class Zhang Simin [dedicated this vessel] in the gengyin year of the Zhizheng reign [1350] for the Confucian school of the Huai’an Circuit.
