Ritual wine cup (jue)

On loan to The Met
This work of art is currently on loan to the museum.
This cup is an example of the communal credit officials took for commissions of ritual bronzes for local Confucian temples. The names documented on the cup indicate that the top officials involved—Hulitai and Hongzhu Haimishi—were either Mongol or Central Asian, not Han Chinese. Their willingness to include their names signals their recognition of the importance of showing respect for China’s Confucian traditions.
