Ritual grain container (fu)

1484
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 216
On loan to The Met
This work of art is currently on loan to the museum.
This fu vessel is a faithful copy of an ancient bronze, yet it also features an unusual design idea. Its inscription includes a request to add a lid as the archaic model, published in an antiquarian catalogue, had lost its cover. The new lid with three peaks had no archaic precedent and demonstrates the Ming artist’s creativity.
