Wine container in the form of a goose

13th century
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 216
On loan to The Met
This work of art is currently on loan to the museum.
This goose-shaped wine container, particularly its extended neck and standing posture, imitates the shape of archaic wine containers (fuzun). While the vessel exhibits a more realistic depiction of the bird, a development that began from the thirteenth century, it still embodies an archaic taste in the generalized expression of the bird’s wings and tail feathers.
