Vase in the form of a ritual wine container (fang)

China

Not on view

Bronze casters made this vase based largely on the illustrations of ritual wine containers (fang) in antiquarian catalogues. A container with a square profile, a fang or fanghu was among the most popular luxury wine containers of the Western Han dynasty (206 BCE–9 CE). This later bronze version has a rectangular profile and elongated foot, prioritizing subtle alterations over the faithful copying of its ancient prototype.
