Vase in the form of a ritual wine container (fang)
On loan to The Met
This work of art is currently on loan to the museum.Bronze casters made this vase based largely on the illustrations of ritual wine containers (fang) in antiquarian catalogues. A container with a square profile, a fang or fanghu was among the most popular luxury wine containers of the Western Han dynasty (206 BCE–9 CE). This later bronze version has a rectangular profile and elongated foot, prioritizing subtle alterations over the faithful copying of its ancient prototype.
