Monsieur Manet (The Artist's Father) I

Edouard Manet French

Not on view

Manet based this print on the double portrait of his parents that he exhibited at the Salon of 1861, on view nearby. It shows how he used etching to reconsider his painted compositions. At the time he made these works, his father’s health was in decline and the artist wrestled with how to portray him in a dignified manner. This struggle is evident in the shifting representation of his gaze; although the elder Manet’s eyes appear downcast in the painting, an X-ray shows that he originally looked outward. Manet returned to the frontal gaze in the etching.

*This work was in Degas’s collection.
