Mechanics Hall: Home of the Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen, New York Building, Corner of Park Place and Broadway, New York

The General Society of Mechanics & Tradesmen of the City of New York was founded in 1785 and received a state charter in 1792. In 1802 the Society bought a property at 239 Broadway and there established Mechanics Hall, the six-storey corner building shown here. They later moved to 30-36 Crosby Street in 1831, to 472 Broadway in 1843 and to18 Sixteenth Street in 1877. In 1899 they settled at 20 West 44th Street which remains their home today.
