Best known as a great scholar of both modern English and Classical poetry, F. L. Lucas also wrote his own novels, poetry, and plays. His Gilgamesh is not a translation of the Babylonian epic but a poetic retelling in free verse, accompanied by vivid wood engravings produced by the artist and illustrator Dorothea Braby.
