In this highly-detailed scene, an Italian peasant family stops by a roadside shrine. At center, against a backdrop of crumbling ruins, a man on horseback doffs his hat. At the left, making up the rear of the entourage, can be seen another man on horseback and a herd of cows.
Carle Vernet was the son of landscape and marine painter, Joseph Vernet. He excelled at the depiction of horses in both battle and genre scenes. He was also a lithographer and was prolific in producing fashion plates and caricatures.
