Ritual wine cup (jue)

China

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 211

This dated jue cup once belonged to the Japanese scholar Ichikawa Beian. It was published in his Shōsanrindō shoga bunbō zuroku (Illustrated catalogue of calligraphy, paintings, and stationery from the Shōsanrindō collection) of 1848. In the late Edo period, Japanese scholars embraced Confucian learning and emulated the lifestyle of Chinese literati. Like the Song scholar-officials who were fond of antiquity, Ichikawa assembled a collection of Chinese bronzes, paintings, and stationery objects. His catalogue closely follows the format of Chinese antiquarian catalogues.
