Vase with animal-mask handles
Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender. From the thirteenth century onward, Chinese archaistic bronzes were highly prized in East Asia. A faithful copy of an archaic wine vessel, this vase is among hundreds of bronze vessels salvaged from the wreck of a trade ship off the coast of Sinan (Jeollanam-do Province, Republic of Korea). According to the wooden cargo tablets found in the wreck, the ship departed from Qingyuan (now Ningbo, Zhejiang Province) in about 1323 and was bound for Hakata (Fukuoka, Japan).
