Plainte Moresque
This sheet music is a testament to the close friendship between Manet and the Spanish musician, Jaime Bosch. The composer and guitarist had emigrated in 1853 to Paris, where a vogue for Spanish culture ensured that he found receptive audiences. Manet and his wife, the pianist Suzanne Leenhoff, were among them, and invited Bosch to perform at their apartment. Bosch dedicated this piece of music, his "Moorish Lament," to Manet and asked him to design its cover. Manet portrays Bosch seated, playing the guitar, and sporting a chaquetilla (short black jacket) and sombrero de catite, attire typical of his native Catalonia.
