Figurine with articulated limbs

Greek

Not on view

This figurine represents a young woman performing a dance—likely in a ritual context—as indicated by krotala (clappers) held in her hands and her nudity. Hundreds of similar figurines were found in sanctuaries and likely served as votive offerings. Jointed figurines were meant to be suspended, hence a hole on top of its head; this would allow a figurine to move—even at the slightest current of air—as if on its own.
