Gaston Maspero was perhaps of the most famous Egyptologist of his generation. That his grand three-volume history of the ancient Near East, Histoire ancienne des peuples de l’Orient classique (Paris, 1895–1897), was translated into English for the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, highlights both the intersection of religious and educational interests in the Society and the degree to which the history of West Asia was seen through the lens of the Bible in nineteenth-century England. The series consists of three volumes: The Dawn of Civilization: Egypt and Chaldea; The Struggle of the Nations: Egypt, Syria and Assyria; and The Passing of the Empires 850-330 BC.
