Unique to printmaking is the fact that different stages of the working process can be preserved. Proof impressions of different states of the print give us a sense of looking over the artist's shoulder as they develop and perfect their images.

The artist writes: "Printmaking is a dirty business, I print my own prints and proofs are an essential reference to working towards the next stage. Usually I draw with charcoal on my proofs to see what needs to darker [sic] or note where to scrape in highlights or add roulette for mid-tones."
