The Ponte Lucano, Near Tivoli

Thomas Manby British
probably before 1685
Not on view
Manby was one of a handful of English landscapists who worked in seventeenth-century Italy. No drawings by him were known until 1931 when a group of eleven appeared in a London auction. Described as anonymous, these were later ascribed to Manby, using inscriptions added by an early artist-owner, Francis Place. This composition centers on an ancient Roman bridge that spans the river Aniene, supporting the via Tiburtina between Tivoli Terme with Hadrian’s Villa. Manby's style was shaped by Dutch-Italianate masters he encountered in Rome, and this work represents the earliest landscape drawing by an English-born artist in the Museum's collection.
