Cup with handle

13th century
Not on view
Sculpted fish swim within a foliated rim, their details defined by incised lines (enlarged on the glass). Made with multiple techniques, this unique cup exemplifies a Goryeo-dynasty celadon. Petal patterns and floral motifs on the exterior frame the waterside scene, all rendered using a technique known as sanggam inlay. The cloud-shaped handle was added before glazing. When filled, the cup appears animated with birds and lotuses at the liquid’s edge and fish submerged beneath.
