Scholar beneath an old tree
Though Li Shan is little known today, an eighteenth-century biography of the painter reveals that he studied with Gao Qipei, a high official at the Qing court and the preeminent finger painter in Chinese history. This unusual painting seems to reflect that training. With broad and boldly applied daubs of ink, the artwork shows the hallmarks of finger painting and its rejection of traditional brush traces.
