Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. de Forest
In 1922 Emily (1850-1942) and Robert (1848-1931) de Forest commissioned Longman to model a double portrait to commemorate their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Four hundred medals were struck and given to guests attending the de Forest's reception. Family members and close friends received a larger version mounted on a plaque. This unique marble medallion was carved the following year and presented to the de Forests by the sculptor. Robert de Forest was president of the Museum's Board of Trustees from 1913 to 1931. In 1922 he and his wife announced a gift to the Metropolitan of an American Wing, consisting of sixteen period rooms and three exhibition galleries.
