Pier Table

The table shows a progression in design from Phyfe’s preference for figural carving with motifs like griffins or lions, like that seen here, to more streamlined aesthetics of the Grecian Plain Style, evident in The American Wing’s Greek Revival Parlor (Gallery 738). The distinct lion mask design of the upright supports on this pier table is possibly a response to Phyfe’s competitors, like Charles-Honoré Lannuier and his popular gilt, caryatid-type tables. In addition to its extraordinary design, this table is one of the best documented examples of Phyfe’s work that has descended through six generations of the Huger-Wells family of New York and Charleston.
