Dieses Foto, eines von über 300 Bildern, die Stieglitz zwischen 1917 und 1937 von Georgia O'Keeffe aufnahm, ist Teil eines außergewöhnlichen, zusammengesetzten Portraits. Stieglitz glaubte, dass das Portrait die gesamte Erfahrung einer Person darstellen sollte, ein Mosaik expressiver Bewegungen, Emotionen und Gesten sein sollte, die gemeinsam ein Leben abbildeten. „Ein Portrait zu verlangen, das ein komplettes Portrait einer Person darstellt", so behauptete er, „ist ebenso sinnlos, wie zu verlangen, dass ein Film in einem einzigen Bild zusammengefasst werden soll."
