Questa fotografia, una delle oltre trecento immagini di Georgia O’Keeffe eseguite da Stieglitz tra il 1917 e il 1937, fa parte di un ritratto straordinariamente composito. Stieglitz riteneva che i ritratti dovessero documentare l’intera esperienza di una persona, un mosaico di movimenti espressivi, di emozioni e gesti che insieme permettono di evocare un’esistenza. “Pretendere che un ritratto sia il ritratto completo di una persona” sosteneva, “è vano come pretendere che un intero film sia riassunto in una singola inquadratura”.
